Brazilian club Bahia fined and suspended for stadium collapse that killed 7

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Brazil's top sports tribunal fined Bahia $45,500 and suspended the club from playing at home for seven matches because of a stadium collapse that killed seven people last month in the nation's worst soccer disaster.

The sports tribunal said Bahia -- the 1988 national champion -- was responsible for securing fan safety during the Nov. 25 match against Vila Nova, which ended 0-0 and marked Bahia's return to the Brazilian league's second division.

Seven fans died and 40 others were injured after a seating section at the Fonte Nova stadium in the northeastern city of Salvador collapsed late in the match. Victims fell nearly 50 feet through a 10-foot wide hole that opened in the concrete stands.

About 60,000 people were at the stadium, and many didn't realize the section of bleachers had given way.

Bahia state officials later said the stadium will be torn down.

In a report issued Nov. 1, architects had flagged the stadium as being in the worst condition of 29 Brazilian soccer stadiums surveyed ahead of the 2014 World Cup -- although Brazilian officials said they did not plan to host Cup games at Fonte Nova.

Spirited Barcelona claw back Real

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona showed real character to stay within four points of leaders Real Madrid with a 2-1 win over struggling Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday maintaining their flawless home record.

Cristian put Deportivo ahead after just two minutes to stun the home crowd but a 40th minute penalty from Ronaldinho restored parity and Xavi struck the winner to make it a perfect eight home wins in the league.

Barcelona, who welcomed Samuel Eto'o and Deco back from injury, stay second and coach Frank Rijkaard will want to stay close to Real ahead of 'El Classico' at Camp Nou on December 23.

"It was not a brilliant game but we won and Eto'o and Deco came back from injury so it was very important," explained Rijkaard.

"We are slowly getting players back from injury and we have a lot more options now and the team is gaining confidence.

"We want to win and play well but we are not at our best at the moment."

Atletico Madrid are a point behind Barcelona in third after a hard-fought 1-0 win over derby rivals Getafe.

Uruguayan international Diego Forlan settled a game full of incident with four sending-offs in 14 minutes.

"It is three vital points," said Atletico manager Javier Aguirre.

"Sometimes you can't win 4-0 playing beautiful football and you need to fight and get physical."

Villarreal slip to fourth after as the wheels appear to be starting to come off their title bid following a 1-0 home defeat by Real Betis.

"Betis did not deserve to take the three points," lamented Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini. "We played well against a team that scored with their only chance in the match.

"We tried everything but it is difficult against a team with ten men behind the ball."

With Thierry Henry still out due to a back complaint Barca coach Rijkaard started with Eto'o, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi in attack.

For Cameroon striker Eto'o it was his first match since badly injuring his knee on August 28.

With Real defeating Athletic Bilbao on Saturday the pressure was on Barcelona and they had a horror start with Cristian firing La Coruna ahead after just two minutes to stun the home fans.

Barcelona had won all seven league matches at Camp Nou and responded with all-out attack.

Five minutes before half-time Messi was adjudged to have been brought down in the area and Ronaldinho converted the subsequent spot-kick.

Xavi then popped up with the decisive goal on 71 minutes to guide Barca back to within four points of Real.

Atletico are also emerging as potential title contenders but they needed to fight their way to the points against Getafe in a stormy encounter.

On 64 minutes, Atletico saw Argentine Kun Aguero sent off for two yellow cards - one for diving and the other an intentional handball.

Seven minutes later Getafe defender Lucas Licht was issued his marching orders and his goalkeeper Pato joined him minutes later after handling outside the area.

Seconds later Atletico winger Jose Antonio Reyes was shown a straight red for a crude tackle as emotions ran high.

Finishing in the top four looks a tall order for Sevilla although they got back on the right track with a 3-1 win over Real Murcia on Sunday.

Brazilian Luis Fabiano moved into double figures for the season, to top the scoring charts, with a brace (4, 89) and Italian Enzo Maresca converted a 58th minute spot-kick.

Sevilla move ninth but just qualifying for Europe is the aim for the back-to-back UEFA Cup winners although they are still in the Champions League.

Real Madrid rules out move for Barcelona's Ronaldinho

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Real Madrid has no plans to make a move for FC Barcelona's Ronaldinho.

Ronaldinho's future at the Camp Nou came under question following reports in Spain that the Brazil midfielder is upset with a lack of playing time. So far, he has been linked with a move to Chelsea or AC Milan in the January transfer window.
"We have many really good players and a player like Ronaldinho we wouldn't sign, we don't have room," Madrid sporting director Predrag Mijatovic told Spanish television station Cuatro.

Ronaldinho was a substitute in the Catalan club's last two games, both draws. It's the first time he hasn't started when healthy since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003.

Barcelona is second in the Spanish league table with 28 points, four behind Madrid.

Real Madrid still team to beat

Real Madrid continued its 100 percent home record on Saturday as they bounced back from its midweek Champions League defeat with a 3-1 victory over in-form Racing Santander.

A seventh successive La Liga triumph at the Bernabeu this season rarely looked in doubt after Real scored twice inside the opening 10 minutes through captain Raul and an own goal.

Raul than curled home his eighth goal of the season from a second-half free-kick to make it 3-0, and although Pedro Munitis pulled a goal back almost immediately, it was not enough to save Racing's nine-match unbeaten run. It also kept Real top of the table.

Espanyol and Barcelona shared a 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested Catalan derby on Saturday night.

Andres Iniesta struck on six minutes to give Barcelona the lead, but substitute Ferran Corominas equalized half-way through the second period to extend Espanyol's unbeaten run to 10 matches and frustrate their city rivals, Sevilla slipped to a third successive Primera Liga defeat of the season when they lost 1-0 to Andalusian rivals Almeria.

The double UEFA Cup holders lost out to an 86th minute goal from Peru defender Santiago Acasiete after Dani Alves was sent off for the second time in a row.

On Sunday, Villarreal visit Real Valladolid, Real Mallorca duel with Real Murcia and Real Zaragoza make the trip to Recreativo Huelva. Getafe host Levante, Osasuna travel to Deportivo La Coruna, Real Betis meet Atletico Madrid while Athletic Bilbao go to Valencia.

FIFA has concerns over 2010 World Cup preparations but no `red light'

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) -- FIFA said Thursday it has some concerns about South Africa's preparations for the 2010 World Cup, while stressing there was no "red light" -- for now -- to getting venues ready on time.

In the run-up to Sunday's preliminary draw for the World Cup, a two-week strike by construction workers at Durban's new soccer stadium raised concerns about delays at several sites, but FIFA said the situation was under control.

"For sure we are looking at what is happening," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said. But, he added, "We are still on track today."

"For the time being there is no red light. There are some concerns on some stadiums," he said.

Striking workers had threatened to disrupt Sunday's preliminary draw.

Danny Jordaan, the head of the 2010 local organizing committee, said he was convinced workers would not threaten the deadlines for finishing stadiums, even though some lag behind schedule.

"We will not fail the delivery of stadiums on time," he said. "We don't doubt the commitment of the workers to make up time."

However, he did not question the right to strike.

"The point is there are always competing interests," Jordaan said. "We have a duty to deliver to FIFA all infrastructure on time."

The deadline for completion of World Cup venues is October 2009, while the five stadiums for the June 2009 Confederations Cup have to be ready by this coming October.

South Africa was awarded the 2010 World Cup three years ago. Since then, there have been concerns about delays in stadium and infrastructure construction, lack of public transportation and high crime rate.

Jordaan said runaway costs were forcing organizers to reassess the budget and could lead to spending cuts.

"Does it constitute a crisis? Definitely not," Jordaan said.

A group of experts is currently investigating where cuts can be made, and a report will be presented to the board of the organizing committee on Friday. Budgets have been affected by the price of steel and the exchange rate.

The South African government is investing some $5.9 billion in the World Cup, including $2.6 billion in stadiums, transportation and supporting infrastructure.

England alive! Israel beats Russia 2-1 in European Championship qualifier

RAMAT GAN, Israel (AP) -- As Dmitry Sychev's 90th-minute drive headed toward the goal, it appeared England would be virtually eliminated from European Championship qualifying.

Then the ball bounced off a post and Omer Golan scored in injury time, giving Israel a 2-1 victory over Russia on Saturday night that could allow the England to join next summer's 16-nation field.

All the English have to do is tie or beat Croatia on Wednesday at Wembley. And Croatia has little incentive to play all out, having clinched a berth because of Israel's victory.

"We have been given another chance to qualify, and that has to motivate every player on Wednesday evening," England midfielder Steven Gerrard said. "If we don't get there it will be so frustrating, and we have to make sure we have the right mentality on Wednesday."

Croatia (8-1-2) clinched a berth despite a 2-0 loss at Macedonia and leads Group E with 26 points, followed by England (7-2-2) with 23. Russia (6-2-3) is third with 21 but England has the tiebreaker because of a better goal difference in splitting its two games against the Russians.

Russia, which had put itself in control of gaining a berth with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over England in Moscow last month, could have virtually eliminated the English with a victory over Israel but now must win at last-place Andorra on Wednesday and hope the English lose.

Elyaniv Barda gave Israel the lead in 10th minute, but Diniyar Bilyaletdinov tied it in the 61st.

"Of course we are very, very disappointed," Russia coach Guus Hiddink said. "We were close. We were the team who was dominating the game."

The English enter Wednesday's game missing Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and John Terry because of injuries and Rio Ferdinand due to a suspension.

"It will be difficult, but I am convinced we will get the result we need," England coach Steve McClaren said. "I always believed it would come down to the Croatia game and, thankfully, it has."

Bayern Munich draws 2-2 with Bolton in UEFA Cup group stage

LONDON (AP) -- Bayern Munich allowed a late goal Thursday and settled for a 2-2 tie with visiting Bolton in the UEFA Cup group stage.

Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan collected a quick throw-in and hooked the ball over Bayern defenders Lucio and Christian Lell before tapping it to Kevin Davies, who scored past Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Khan in the 82nd minute.

"We didn't think that this is a team playing internationally that can also shoot goals," Kahn said.

Lukas Podolski scored twice for four-time European champion Bayern, which is in the UEFA Cup after 10 years in the Champions League because it finished fourth in the German league last season.

Other winners Thursday were Tottenham, Everton, Panathinaikos, Villareal, Fiorentina, Spartak Moscow, Sparta Prague, Bordeaux, Zenit St. Petersburg and Helsingborg. The 1991 European champion Red Star Belgrade lost 3-0 at Greek side Aris.

Ricardo Gardner scored in the eighth minute for Bolton, which is 19th in the English Premier League. Bolton was playing its first European match with new manager Gary Megson, who took over on Oct. 25.

Podolski scored in the 30th and 49th minutes, both set up by Franck Ribery.

"Naturally I'm disappointed over the result, but not the way we played," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. "We were too careless, that really makes me mad."

Red Star -- which lost in injury-time to Bayern 3-2 in the first round -- conceded goals in the 89th and 90th minutes against Aris. Athanassios Papazoglu scored twice and Sergio Kolce added the other.

Tottenham beat Hapoel Tel Aviv 2-0, including Robbie Keane's 10th goal of the season on a volley off a cross from Steed Malbranque. Malbranque helped set up the second, sending a crossing pass to Dimitar Berbatov, who put a header past goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

Spurs, a two-time UEFA Cup champion, lost 2-1 at home to Getafe in its opening group match. It has since replaced coach Martin Jol with Juande Ramos, who guided Sevilla to consecutive UEFA Cup titles.

In the other Group G game, Aalborg scored in the 86th minute to draw Anderlecht 1-all.

Fiorentina extended its overall unbeaten streak to 21 matches with a 6-1 rout of Swedish side Elfsborg in Group C.

Martin Jorgensen scored twice and Christian Vieri, Marco Donadel, Per Kroldrup and Samuel Di Carmine also found the net for the Viola.

Elfsborg forward James Keene was carried off on a stretcher in the 21st minute after getting hit by the ball in the face and head. He did not need hospital treatment.

Karol Kisel scored two goals, including the winner, in Sparta Prague's 3-2 victory at Toulouse in the other group game.

Roman Pavlyuchenko scored on a penalty kick after Bayer Leverkusen forward Stefan Kiessling fouled Morais Welliton in the 63rd minute, launching Spartak Moscow's 2-1 win. Santos Mozart converted another penalty in the 77th after Maxym Kalynychenko was fouled by Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler.

Bayer Leverkusen, which is sixth in the German league, scored in injury time.

Villareal won its first group game, 2-1 over Mlada Boleslav behind goals from Sanit Carzorla and Nihat Kahveci.

Mikel Arteta converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute and Victor Anichebe added another six minutes later for Everton to win 2-0 at FC Nuremberg in Group A. Russian league leader Zenit defeated Larissa 3-2 in the other group game, Fatih Teke scoring the winner in the 78th minute by glancing in a cross from Alejandro Dominguez.

Henrik Larsson scored for Helsingborg in its 3-2 win at Galatasaray in Group H. Christoffer Andersson and Razak Omotoyossi added the other goals for the Swedish team. Bordeaux beat Austria Vienna 2-1 in the other group match with a penalty kick in the 88th minute by Brazilian forward Wendel.

Rennes earned a 1-1 tie with FK Brann with an 88th-minute penalty kick from Bruno Cheyrou, and Dinamo Zagreb drew 0-0 at FC Basel in Group D.

Panathiniakos won 1-0 at FC Copenhagen behind a goal from Dame Ndoye, and Aberdeen and Lokomotiv Moscow tied 1-all in Group B.

The top three clubs from each group advance to the knockout stage. The next round is Nov. 29.

Injury time goal gives Arsenal draw with United

LONDON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - An injury-time goal by skipper William Gallas gave Arsenal a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to preserve their unbeaten record this season and keep them top of the Premier League.

Gallas's strike was adjudged to have crossed the line by the linesman and referee Howard Webb as the match reached a frenetic finale.

It was even more special for Gallas who had scored an own goal at the end of the first half to give United the lead.

With only a minute of stoppage time remaining, Arsenal had looked destined for defeat after Cristiano Ronaldo put the champions 2-1 up from close range in the 82nd minute.

Instead, Arsenal stay top with 27 points from their 11 matches, while United, who have scored fewer goals, remain second on 27 from 12 games.

A vast global television audience watched Arsenal's 25th match in all competitions without defeat, a club record, while the draw ended United's run of eight successive league wins.

While United went in 1-0 up at the interval it took Arsenal only three minutes of the second half to equalise when Cesc Fabregas chose his spot for his 11th goal of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to have sealed the win for United with his 82nd minute strike before Gallas saved the day for the league leaders.

SCORING CHANCES

Both teams created scoring chances, with United having the first after 16 minutes. Ryan Giggs shot wide from close range with only keeper Manuel Almunia to beat after a Ronaldo cross eluded defender Bacary Sagna and left Giggs with the goal beckoning at the far post.

Giggs went close again when he turned and shot just over the bar after 23 minutes.

Although Arsenal had played some neat approach work in midfield, their first real attempt did not come until the 36th minute when Gallas powered in a header from a Cesc Fabregas free-kick which Van der Sar did well to parry with his legs before United cleared.

United went ahead in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Gallas turned the ball past Almunia as he tried to block a close-range shot from England striker Wayne Rooney.

Stunned by Gallas's own goal, Arsenal were more threatening after the break.

They were level within three minutes of the second half with Fabregas scoring his fourth goal in his last three matches.

FABREGAS SPOT

Van der Sar appeared to have done enough to block a shot from Emmanuel Adebayor, but the ball ran free to Sagna whose quick pass gave Fabregas time and space to score.

Van der Sar had to make another good save after 59 minutes from another Fabregas free-kick at the edge of the box.

Rooney and Giggs then combined at the other end, with Rooney heading wide after a clever exchange of passes with Giggs. Ronaldo restored the champions' lead with a cool finish after a sweet passing move involving substitute Louis Saha and Patrice Evra split the Arsenal defence wide open.

But Gallas came to Arsenal's rescue, earning a draw that was a fair result between the champions and the team most likely to press them all the way this season.

FIFA set to change World Cup rotation system

FIFA set to change World Cup rotation system

By Martyn Ziegler Special to PA SportsTicker

ZURICH, Switzerland (Ticker) - FIFA is expected to decide on Monday to change the system of rotating the World Cup finals between the continents.

FIFA's executive committee, which will meet in Zurich, is to examine various options including whether more than one country from each continent can bid.

Under the current rotation system, the World Cup went to Africa for 2010 (South Africa won the contest), South America for 2014 and if rotation continued would go to a country from north and central America or the Caribbean in 2018. The United States plans to bid in 2018.

However FIFA president Sepp Blatter is concerned that only one nation - Brazil - bid for 2014 and said last week that he favored a change.

"My thoughts are that we shall open the market and make the World Cup available for everybody apart from the last confederation which has just organized it, which means South America cannot bid for 2018," Blatter said. The FIFA president should get his way as the majority of the 23 FIFA executive members who meet in Zurich are understood to be of the same opinion.

Cal goalkeeper fights cancer, with a little help from her friends

Cal goalkeeper fights cancer, with a little help from her friends

By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
October 25, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- The diagnosis came a few weeks ago for California goalkeeper Jorden LaFontaine-Kussmann -- lymphoma.

Now the 18-year-old freshman is about to undergo her second round of chemotherapy to attack a large mass in the middle of her chest. When she told her friends and dorm mates on the men's soccer team she will soon be bald, they beat her to it: They shaved their heads in support.

"She's amazing," said Jordan Bethke, a freshman goalie on the Cal men's team. "She's dealing with it like a champ."

LaFontaine-Kussmann is handling her ordeal with a sense of humor and sense of purpose. She insists she will be back on the field for the 2008 season.

"I kind of just feel like I'm injured for six months," she said. "I will pick back up where I left off. Not playing soccer is not an option."

LaFontaine-Kussmann is staying in school, choosing not to return home to Lakewood, Wash., for treatment because of the support at Cal.

The men's players sporting what are now buzz cuts -- the hair is growing back and they plan to shave again -- but that's just the beginning.

Her teammates are wearing navy blue wristbands with the initials "JLK" and lime green warmup shirts donated by the Missouri women's soccer team. The Cal players also had green bracelets made in honor of Jorde, as they call her, and are planning a head scarf and hat party so she is prepared to stay warm this winter.

Teammate Megan Jesolva cut her hair to have a wig made for LaFontaine-Kussmann. Cal also is trying to get former players involved.

"I sent an e-mail out to the coaches in Division I and asked if they had any experiences to share," first-year Cal coach Neil McGuire said. "The overwhelming response has been incredible. Not only are we mobilizing but so are other programs."

When the Bears play at Arizona State on Friday night, the Sun Devils will wear wristbands in her honor. Former Cal coach Kevin Boyd is now at ASU, and he recruited LaFontaine-Kussmann.

She will move into an apartment next week, with one of her sisters who has relocated to the Bay Area to help. Her parents also will be around regularly.

Because her cancer affects the cells of the immune system, LaFontaine-Kussmann has to be extra careful not to get sick. After her chemo treatments, which last anywhere from six to eight hours at a time, she is zapped. So having her own space and being out of the dorms will allow her to be much more comfortable as she recovers.

She will have five more chemo sessions spaced over three-week spans, followed by two months of radiation.

The last thing she wants is to be treated as if she is sick.

"Why be down and depressed about it?" she said. "I have the best situation going -- a school that cares. I kind of feel lucky."

LaFontaine-Kussmann, who feels blessed to have both her biological and adopted father in her life and thus the hyphenated last name, began experiencing sharp chest pains last month. While convinced they would go away, she told the team trainer anyway. And then began a whirlwind week of tests and scans and more exams.

She's thankful that she spoke up. Doctors said the fast-growing mass had been developing for about a year, but the cancer hadn't spread and most likely would respond well to treatment. Two years ago, she dealt with a skin cancer on the Achilles' tendon area of her left foot.

"I don't want to say I'm not emotional because I am," she said. "But it's just another bump in the road. It's hard sometimes. It's not an option not to get through it."

LaFontaine-Kussmann already has lopped 8 inches off her long hair and is sporting a stylish bob. She planned to trim it one more time before the chemicals in her body do their part and she loses it all.

"I'm still holding onto the hope it won't fall out," she said with a grin, superstitiously crossing her fingers on both hands and holding them in the air. "It's nice. I have never had hair this short, so it gives me a reason to try it."

LaFontaine-Kussmann is trying to stay active with the team as much as possible. Some days are better than others. This week, she helped set up cones and kicked the ball around as long as she could before becoming too winded.

"Whenever I feel well, I try to join in," she said.

She had to drop one class, but her professors and academic advisers have been eager to assist.

"It's going to be tough, but a lot of things are going to be tough," she said. "I've been here three months and have made so many friends who would do that for me."

England must cope with injuries, artificial surface as six teams hope to reach Euro 2008

By STUART CONDIE, AP Sports Writer
October 16, 2007

LONDON (AP) -- England is among several teams hoping to advance to next year's European Championship on Wednesday and must contend with injuries and an unfamiliar artificial surface to do so.

England will qualify for a sixth straight European tournament appearance with a win, but several key players may be out and those that do play at Russia face the fake grass of Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

Greece, Czech Republic and Sweden could also clinch a berth with a month of qualifying still to go, while Croatia and Poland can advance without even playing.

England is on a streak of five straight 3-0 wins that have revived the team. England beat Russia last month and that reportedly prompted the Russian soccer federation to decide against installing a new surface at the Luzhniki Stadium.

The experience of playing on that surface could give Russia an advantage.

England trained on a similar surface before traveling and the Football Association has taken extra insurance to cover its players in case they get injured.

Russia needs a victory for a realistic chance of becoming one of two teams to advance from Group E and coach Guus Hiddink is counting on the intimidating surroundings giving his team an edge it lacked at Wembley

"The psychological aspect gives us a huge advantage and the fans will create a fiery atmosphere," Hiddink said. "It will be difficult for England."

England must also cope without left back Ashley Cole, who injured his ankle in Saturday's victory over Estonia, while captain John Terry should play despite sitting out the last game with a knee injury.

"We have trained on an artificial pitch in the past few days so we know what it is all about," England defender Rio Ferdinand said. "Russia have more experience on the pitch in Moscow, but I think our quality can come through."

England has 23 points. Russia has 18 and knows that an England win would advance the visitors and give Croatia a berth too.

Like Croatia, Poland does not even need to play to advance. It could reach its first European Championship if Serbia and Portugal lose to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in Group A, but Poland is more likely to have to wait until it plays at Serbia next month to advance.

Defending European champion Greece is at rival Turkey looking to get even for a 4-1 loss with a win that would seal a place in Austria and Switzerland. Greece recovered after that loss in March and now leads Group C with three games remaining.

The Czech Republic plays at Germany and needs a draw to advance from Group D. The Czechs got a boost Saturday when the Germans became the first team to qualify, rendering the game almost meaningless from their perspective.

Sweden needs a win at Northern Ireland and the Group F leader is aiming to avenge an earlier 2-1 defeat -- its only loss in qualifying.

"We are looking for revenge," Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic said. "They will pull back and we just have to go for it and try to get an early goal. Both teams want to win and it's going to be tough."

Scotland leads Group B with 24 points before its match at Georgia, one more than Italy and two more than France.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Brazil forward Afonso Alves scored seven goals, including four in 10 minutes, to set a Dutch league record Sunday and lead SC Heerenveen to a 9-0 rout of Heracles Almelo in the first division.

He scored his first goal of the season in the 10th and followed with goals in the 17th, 18th, 68th, 70th, 74th and 77th. Gerald Sibon also scored in the 60th and 80th minutes in the biggest victory for Heerenveen in its 87-year history.

Feyenoord regained first place after Nicky Hofs scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over Vitesse Arnhem, and Ajax drew 2-2 at Sparta Rotterdam. Feyenoord, a 14-time league winner, has 18 points, one above Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

LONDON (AP) -- Arsenal returned to first place in the Premier League, defeating Sunderland 3-2 on Robin van Persie's second goal in the 80th minute.

Chelsea beat Bolton 1-0, giving Avram Grant his first victory as coach of the Blues. Chelsea ended a 460-minute goal drought in the league when Salomon Kalou scored in the 41st minute.

Fernando Torres scored in the 90th minute to salvage a 2-2 tie for Liverpool against Tottenham, and Michael Owen marked his return from minor surgery with a goal in Newcastle's 3-2 win over Everton.

Arsenal leads the standings with 22 points, followed by Manchester United with 20. The Red Devils had moved into the top spot Saturday for the first time this season with a 4-0 win over Wigan. Manchester City is third with 19 points and Liverpool is fourth with 16.

Reading beat Derby 1-0 on Kevin Doyle's 64th-minute header to end a two-game losing streak. Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann kept his third shutout of the Premier League season -- a marked contrast to last Saturday, when the American let in seven goals in a 7-4 loss to Portsmouth.

Reading's other American international, Bobby Convey, was not in the squad because of a leg injury. U.S. midfielder Eddie Lewis came on as a 65th-minute substitute for Derby.

Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel helped his team win 2-1 by pushing a header from Birmingham's Olivier Kapo over the bar in injury time. Another American goalkeeper, Everton's Tim Howard, was not as lucky. Everton lost even though Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given scored a late own-goal.

Fulham started three Americans -- goalkeeper Kasey Keller, defender Carlos Bocanegra and striker Clint Dempsey -- in a 2-0 loss to Portsmouth. Dempsey's third-minute shot was turned around the post by Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- Kaka and Alberto Gilardino scored two goals each, sending AC Milan past Lazio 5-1 for its first victory in six rounds of the Italian first division.

Kaka converted a penalty kick in the 33rd and in the 52nd held off two defenders and shot through the legs of Lazio goalkeeper Nestor Fernando Muslera. The Brazilian then created an opening in the 70th for Gilardino, who beat Muslera for his first goal of the season.

Adrian Mutu converted an 88th-minute penalty kick to help Fiorentina draw with Juventus 1-1 and Francesco Totti had two goals and set up another as AS Roma routed 10-man Parma 3-0.

Inter Milan, which beat Napoli 2-1 on Saturday, leads the Serie A standings with 17 points, followed by Juventus and Roma with 14, Fiorentina with 13 and Genoa with 12. Milan is tied with Napoli and Atalanta with 10 points.

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Lionel Messi scored for the sixth straight game to lead FC Barcelona to a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish league.

Messi scored in the 19th, three minutes after Deco had put Barcelona ahead when he took advantage of a goalkeeping error by backup Christian Abbiati. Xavi Hernandez added a third in injury time.

Barcelona is second with 17 points. Real Madrid stayed atop the standings with 19 points after beating Recreativo Huelva 2-0 with second-half goals from Ruud van Nistelrooy and substitute Gonzalo Higuain.

Villarreal stayed third with 15 points after losing to Osasuna 3-2. Valencia, which lost to Espanyol 2-1 on Saturday, also has 15 points. Deportivo La Coruna handed Sevilla its fourth straight defeat with a 1-0 win.

BERLIN (AP) -- Bayern Munich extended its lead at the top of the German first division with two goals from Luca Toni in a 3-0 win against Bavarian rival FC Nuremberg.

Toni tied injured teammate Miroslav Klose for the league high of eight goals this season.

"You call that class, he's always in the right place," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said.

Bayern is five points ahead of second-placed Karlsruher SC for a record lead after nine rounds of the season.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 behind Sotirios Kyrgiakos's header goals in the 54th and 79th minutes.

Leverkusen dropped to eighth place. Last week, the team was second and gave Bayern its toughest match in weeks before losing 1-0.

Brazil World Cup veteran Casagrande leaves hospital after car accident

September 25, 2007

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Former Brazil striker Casagrande was released from the hospital on Tuesday after recovering from a car accident over the weekend.

Casagrande, who played in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, was briefly in a coma after the car he was in rolled over and struck several parked vehicles late Saturday night on a Sao Paulo street.

The popular TV commentator recovered from a head trauma and other injuries, the Albert Einstein Hospital said in a statement.

Casagrande's girlfriend remained hospitalized with a back injury, but was in good condition, doctors said.

The 44-year-old former player, whose full name is Walter Casagrande Jr., was one of the biggest stars of powerhouse club Corinthians in the 1980s. He later played for FC Porto, Flamengo, Ascoli and Torino, which he won the Italian Cup with in 1993.

Brazil and North Korea among new powers heading for quarterfinals

Brazil and North Korea among new powers heading for quarterfinals

SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- The quarterfinals will be set in a few days for the Women's World Cup. One thing is already very clear.

New powers are emerging in the women's game, and Brazil and North Korea are two of them. Neither has won this tournament, which has been dominated by the United States (two titles) and European teams -- Germany is the defending champion and Norway won in 1995.

The final is Sept. 30 in Shanghai, and nobody would bet against those two quick, attacking teams contesting that game.

Brazil is nearly certain to win Group D after its impressive 4-0 victory over China on Saturday behind two goals by Marta, the tournament's top scorer with four.

"The gap has closed a lot between teams at the top," said Silvia Neid, Germany's coach.

The Brazilian women play like their male counterparts, who have won an unprecedented five World Cups. They're flashy, open up other defenses with backheel passes and attack with one-on-one superiority.

"It's not only Marta on Brazil, they have many 'small Martas' too," China coach Marika Domanski-Lyfors said. "They have good qualities, every player."

Brazil, which faces Denmark on Wednesday in its final group game, will probably face Australia or Canada in the quarterfinals in Tianjin on Sept. 23. Those two teams face off Wednesday with Australia needing only a draw to grab second place in Group C.

The winner of Group C is likely to be Norway, though Australia could also win it. The top team in that group will probably be up against China on Sept. 23 in Wuhan. China faces New Zealand in the final group game on Wednesday. New Zealand has lost its first two games and has yet to score.

The tougher Groups A and B are still unclear.

Defending champion Germany is tied with Japan atop Group A with four points. The two play Monday in Hangzhou with Germany heavily favored. The Germans would win the group with a victory. England seems likely to take second place. It faces Argentina on Monday -- the South Americans have lost two games -- and could claim second place with a victory.

Japan has played well in the tournament and a victory or draw against Germany would throw Group A into a three-way struggle for two places.

The No. 1-ranked United States and No. 5-ranked North Korea seem sure to get the two places from Group B. The U.S. finishes group play against Nigeria on Tuesday in Shanghai. North Korea faces Sweden on Tuesday in Tianjin.

Through two games, North Korea and the Americans are even on the first three criteria FIFA uses to break ties in the standings: points, goals and goal difference.

The winner of Group A plays the No. 2 team in Group B on Sept. 22 in Wuhan. The second-place team in A plays the No. 1 team from Group B on the same day in Tianjin.

April's draw for the World Cup stunned the United States, which is undefeated in 48 games and the favorite to win its third World Cup title.

Minutes before the draw in Wuhan, FIFA, soccer's world governing body, arbitrarily placed North Korea into Group B and declined to explain why. Minutes later, the U.S., Sweden and Nigeria were drawn into the group.

In effect, placing North Korea in Group B allows host China to avoid Asia's top team -- and its toughest rival -- until the semifinals.

"At this point there is nothing we can do about it," U.S. striker Abby Wambach said. "Right when the draw happened, we were all like, 'How can this be?"'

September 13, 2007
FOXBORO, Massachusetts (Ticker) - It may have just been an international friendly, but Brazil wanted to win this game as if it counted.
In front of a crowd of 67,584 donned primarily in Brazilian yellow at Gillette Stadium Wednesday night, talented midfielder Kaka scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute to lead Brazil to a 3-1 victory over Mexico in their teams' last tuneup before 2010 World Cup qualifying.
The Brazilian team and new coach Dunga were surprised and pleased with the attendance of the Brazilian faithful.

"I was very proud to have them here," Dunga said. "Especially with our victory, it's a great happiness for our people here."
"I was surprised," Mexican coach Hugo Sanchez said. "It really felt like we were in Brazil."
As the raucous crowd looked on, Kaka found a ball waiting for him from eight yards out after Mexican defender Rafael Marquez failed to clear a cross, and the midfielder struck the near post with his shot as it just got past the keeper to break a 1-1 tie.
Dunga experimented in this game by moving Kaka up in the midfield to play more of a hybrid role between forward and midfield. The results spoke for themselves, as the AC Milan star scored the winning goal and dominated play on the field all day.
"He was very successful today," Dunga said. "This is a great opportunity to experiment with different positions and players."
It was a goal the whole game was building toward, as Brazil had two headers earlier in the half that were denied by a Mexican defender standing on the goal line and by a fantastic reaction save by Guillermo Ochoa.
"From that moment on we had to risk (going forward) and that's what lead to the third goal," Sanchez said.
Brazil added an insurance goal in the 86th minute, when substitute Afonso blasted the ball into the far corner of the goal to ensure victory.
Brazil had plenty of chances to score early in the first half, but couldn't convert, and despite Brazil's dictation of the play for most of the first half, Mexico put the first goal on the board in the 43rd minute on a counter attack.
Andres Guardado controlled a cross near the left corner of the six-yard box, and with Brazilian keeper Cesar Julio closing in on him, Guardado calmly slotted the ball across to the middle of the field, where Juan Carlos Cacho was waiting with an open goal in front of him. Cacho took his time and placed the ball into the back of the net to put Mexico ahead 1-0.
Brazil was quick to answer.
In the 45th minute, Ronaldinho placed the Brazilian corner kick toward the near post, where midfielder Kleber awkwardly stuck his left leg out just enough to catch the ball and redirect it into the net. It tied the score just before halftime and drew a roar from the largely pro-Brazilian crowd.
"It would have been a little more fair if we had gone into halftime with a better score," Sanchez said. "If we had the score at 1-0, it would have been more difficult for Brazil to score later."
Brazil dominated the second half, and only a few great saves kept Selecao from scoring a few more goals.
The game was physical for a friendly, as multiple players received yellow cards and Brazil's Elano received a red card in the 82nd minute for a vicious swipe at Mexico's Herardo Torrado's legs.
"In certain locations, there was excessive force," Sanchez said.
Despite his team's safe lead, Brazilian coach Dunga was ejected in the 94th minute.
After the game, Dunga was cautiously optimistic about his team's future.
"I was very pleased with the performance, but it's clear we have to correct a few things," he said. "I was very pleased how the players played their positions today, particularly with 2 v 2s and 3 v 2s."
Sanchez was also pleased with the way his team played.
"I'm happy because we played at the same level as Brazil," he said. "We want to learn from the good things Brazil does."
Brazil finished its two-game tour of the United States tonight, which started with a 4-2 victory over the United States on Sunday, and the team and its coach were pleased with its stay.
"This was a great experience," Dunga said, "particularly with so many Brazilian Americans here. It is something we will continue doing."
